One person dies trying to rescue dog from Central NY house fire

Rome, N.Y. – A person and a dog died in a fire in Rome on Friday night, firefighters said.

Firefighters arrived at the three-story building at 305 East Dominic St. at around 6 p.m., where they saw heavy fire on the second floor and heavy smoke throughout the building, according to Deputy Chief Tim Riley of the Rome Fire Department.

The fire had originated in a second-floor bedroom, Riley said.

A person who entered the building to save their dogs died. One dog died in the fire; another survived, he said.

The building sustained heavy fire damage on the second floor. Two occupants were assisted by the Red Cross.

Firefighters were on the scene until 10:30 p.m. A cause has not yet been determined.

The Rome Police Department, Rome Department of Public Works, National Grid and AmCare Ambulance Service assisted on the scene.
