Despite a disappointing Rotten Tomatoes rating of 53%, Jurassic World Rebirth has posted a colossal Box Office performance so far. The film has grossed $174,574,875 in the U.S. and $349,368,875 worldwide. The Jurassic World franchise has proven to be a critic-proof series, with each film having turned a profit for Universal thus far, despite poor critical reception. Jurassic World Rebirth’s Popcorn Meter also indicates that audiences are still interested in future movies, amassing a brilliant 72% from viewers. The franchise’s future is bright, and there is plenty of potential for the direction of future movies. The Lost World: Jurassic Park, for instance, contains some fascinating lore that deserves further exploration.

The first Jurassic Park sequel reveals that John Hammond’s original plans for Jurassic Park included a dinosaur zoo in San Diego. Jurassic Park San Diego was envisioned as a giant amphitheater, where its prehistoric residents would reside. Construction on the park began in 1983, before plans were halted in 1985 when John Hammond chose Isla Nublar for the first Jurassic Park location instead. The proposal was later revived by Peter Ludlow, after the disastrous events of Jurassic Park, using various dinosaurs from Isla Sorna to populate the San Diego location. The Jurassic World saga has yet to revisit this aspect of The Lost World: Jurassic Park’s lore, which is a shame, as it could make for some of Jurassic World’s most entertaining movies.

Jurassic World Should Expand To Further Territories

Peter Ludlow (Arliss Howard) shows off a model of Jurassic Park: San Diego to his investors in The Lost World: Jurassic Park.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park hints at an exciting plot development for future films, where Jurassic World expands to further territories. Jurassic Park San Diego was to have eight species of dinosaurs, including the Brachiosaurus, the Compsognathus, and the Gallimimus. Its location would have given U.S. residents a more convenient place to see real-life dinosaurs than flying to Isla Nublar.

Following The Lost World: Jurassic Park’s conclusion, it is unclear what has happened to the park that had been built by John Hammond and later Peter Ludlow. It is not hard to imagine that a wealthy businessman could have revived Jurassic Park San Diego, with plans to turn it into a fully operational dinosaur zoo. To date, the state of California has 252.5 million visitors a year, bringing plenty of footfall for a San Diego location. After Isla Nublar’s volcanic eruption in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, San Diego would be the next logical move for a revived Jurassic World, due to the park having already completed construction.

Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), Owen Grady (Chris Pratt), Zach (Nick Robinson) and Gray (Ty Simpkins) stand together in Jurassic World.

Following the likely success of Jurassic Park San Diego, Jurassic World could expand to Europe. This was already suggested in the original Jurassic Park, had the Isla Nublar park been successful. Jurassic Park Europe was to have been built in Portugal, on an island in the Azores. Jurassic World Europe would be interesting to see revived, as it could explore the difference in cultures between the American and Portuguese populations. For instance, much of the signage in the Azores park would likely be in Portuguese, due to how English is not Portugal’s native language. Portugal also had some unique dinosaur species in comparison to the USA, including the Lusotitan and the Miragaia, which could be introduced to Jurassic World for the first time through the European location.

Jurassic World would not need to stop at San Diego and Portugal, however. Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park book details John Hammond’s proposition for a Jurassic Park in Japan. The dinosaur zoo was set to be constructed on an island near Guam, with work on the project beginning in 1990. John Hammond envisioned the park opening in 1995, before it was scrapped after Alan Grant, Ian Malcolm, and Ellie Sattler refused to give Jurassic Park Isla Nublar their endorsement after the dinosaurs escaped.

Although not currently mentioned in any Jurassic Park media, a Jurassic World in China could be another possibility. This would echo real-life theme park enterprises, like Disneyland, which have expanded to locations in Shanghai. As with the Azores park, Jurassic Park Japan has its own distinctive types of dinosaurs, such as the Fukuisaurus and the Fukisaurus, and China was known for prehistoric animals like the Caihong Juji and Mamenchisaurus Sinocanadorum, which would give them their own unique identity that sets them apart from Jurassic World Isla Nublar, and allow moviegoers to see dinosaurs not commonly seen in film.

The Public Would Still Visit Despite The Danger Posed By Dinosaurs

One aspect that has never made sense about the first Jurassic Park and Jurassic World is why the parks are never reopened after the dinosaurs escape. Hammond didn’t get the approval he sought from Alan Grant and company to satisfy his investors, and both Jurassic Park and Jurassic World would have needed a healthy investment to rebuild the damaged structures. However, it seems drastic that both parks should be shut down after only one incident. In reality, the parks would only close temporarily while repairs are undertaken and reopened to visitors later.

In the real world, dangerous animals such as lions and tigers are harbored in zoos, and as with the T Rex and the Spinosaurus, they also hold the deadly potential to kill human visitors if they escape. In 2022, five lions escaped from Taronga Zoo in Sydney, forcing the zoo into lockdown. Staff and visitors were instructed to remain in emergency shelters until the lions were safely returned to their enclosures.

Zookeepers are equipped with an array of equipment to deal with escaped animals, such as tranquilizers and nets. The Taronga Zoo reopened following the incident. Another popular tourist attraction is safaris, which bring visitors closer to predatory species in their vehicles. Despite reports of lions climbing on top of cars at West Midland Safari Park, tourists still continue to visit these places while being fully aware of the potential risks they pose.

The Complete Jurassic Park & World Timeline (Including Jurassic World Rebirth)

Jurassic Park & Jurassic World already has a complex and varied timeline to explore and a brand new animated show adds to that legacy.

It seems unlikely, therefore, that park visitors would be dissuaded from visiting Jurassic World as a result of the previous incidents at Jurassic Park and the Jurassic World Isla Nublar site. After the T-Rex famously broke out of its paddock in Jurassic Park, a dinosaur considered one of the strongest in the series, people still flocked to Jurassic World when it opened on the same island on May 30, 2005. The park became a resounding success, welcoming over 20,000 visitors every day. The Indominus Rex’s rampage through the park resulted in its closure in 2015.

While several deaths and fatalities came from the Indominus Rex breaking free from its enclosure, with other prehistoric creatures like Pterodactyls and Ankylosauruses also on the loose, there would likely still be a public interest in visiting a dinosaur zoo. Visitors traveled to Jurassic World while knowing of the possible risks involved in attending the park, as Jurassic World offers people the chance to see animals they wouldn’t normally encounter in their day-to-day lives. Investors would be attracted to the money-making opportunities in reopening Jurassic World in other locations, as dinosaurs remain an attractive species for many individuals across the globe.

A future Jurassic World movie set in a new park could showcase how Jurassic World’s safety measures have been improved. A smart move would be to incorporate elements from the Jurassic World Evolution and Jurassic Park Operation Genesis video games, like the emergency shelters and the avoidance beacons, to keep the public safe from escaped prehistoric beings. Placing more focus on the ACU response teams patrolling in their helicopters, and the rangers on the ground armed with their cattle prods, would also be great to see. While Jurassic World did place some focus on the ACU rangers, most of the action was focused around Owen and Claire, and exploring more of the ACU rangers’ reactions to escaped dinosaurs could show how their response time has been improved in response to the Indominus Rex situation. The best Jurassic World films focus on the parks that came from John Hammond’s vision, and returning to films about fully-operational dinosaur zoos would be the greatest decision for the franchise’s future.
