The Dallas Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Wednesday morning in the 3000 block of Fairview Ave. in the Old East Dallas area.

The backstory:

The deadly encounter happened just before 10 a.m. on July 9.

Dallas police officers responded to a 911 call on Fairview Avenue regarding a man in the street with a long knife.

The armed suspect was reportedly kicking the door of a residence and putting the knife to his neck.

Police said when the officers arrived, they gave him loud verbal commands to drop the knife. But he did not drop it.

That’s when officers reportedly used less-lethal force. Police said it was unsuccessful, leading officers to give more loud verbal commands.

At least one officer fired shots at the man after he allegedly advanced towards the officers.

He was taken to the hospital, where he died.

The man’s knife was recovered, and no officers were injured.

What’s next:

The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office will conduct its own separate investigation into the police shooting.
