Portland’s WNBA team drops another name hint before the official announcement

  • July 14, 2025

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – Portland’s WNBA team is rumored to re-ignite the original “Portland Fire” name and brand identity.

Portland’s WNBA expansion team was officially announced back in September 2024, in a collaborative Instagram post captioned: “The city of Portland is going to be on fire.”

On Jul. 14, the team’s Instagram account, @wbnaportland, posted a black and white image with the text: “Our fire never died,” further leading to name speculation among the community.

The Portland Fire was the name of the previous Portland WNBA team from 2000 to 2002, and in June, the team filed a trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the name “Portland Fire.”

The team brand and name will be officially announced Tuesday, Jul. 15, at the Moda Center. Watch FOX 12 starting at 6 a.m. to see the big event.
