Organizers said it’s part of a mobilization to defend democracy and fight against authoritarianism and the weaponization of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal agencies.
“We can’t be silent,” said L. Joy Williams, the president of the NAACP New York State Conference. “So we have to demonstrate, we have to give voice to our opposition of these things happening. But at the same time, we will continue to fervently work to push back against this and try to propel this country in a different direction.”
Protesters also spoke out against the war in Iran.
Responding to the demonstrations in a statement provided to NY1, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said: “The only people who care about these Trump derangement therapy sessions are the reporters who are paid to cover them.”
Other “No Kings Day” rallies were held throughout the five boroughs.
