Each April, communities across the country recognize National Volunteer Month as a time to celebrate the individuals who give their time, talent, and expertise in service to others. In West Chicago, that spirit of service is reflected in the dedicated residents who serve on the City’s boards and commissions.
These volunteers play a vital role in shaping the future of West Chicago. They bring professional knowledge, lived experience, and a deep commitment to community into the decision-making process. Whether reviewing development proposals, advancing cultural initiatives, supporting environmental stewardship, or helping guide policy, their contributions ensure that a wide range of perspectives inform the City’s work.
The City of West Chicago is supported by nine Boards and Commissions, representing more than 60 volunteer positions filled by community members who help guide key decisions and initiatives. Appointments are typically reserved for residents who are interested in serving their community.
The City extends its sincere gratitude to all members of its boards and commissions for their time, insight, and dedication. Their service strengthens transparency, enhances civic engagement, and helps position West Chicago as a vibrant and forward-looking community.
Get Involved
For those looking to make a meaningful impact, West Chicago offers several opportunities to get involved:
Building Board of Appeals
This board hears and decides appeals of building code determinations to ensure the City’s adopted codes are correctly interpreted and fairly applied. The City is seeking qualified professionals in structural engineering, mechanical or plumbing contracting, electrical contracting, or fire protection systems.
Cultural Arts Commission
This commission advises the City on cultural and artistic matters and enriches community life by promoting the arts through public art, programming, partnerships, education, and initiatives that strengthen West Chicago’s identity, placemaking, and economic vitality. The City is seeking individuals with experience in the performing arts, especially musicians and thespians, to help guide these efforts.
Downtown Revitalization Commission (Temporary)
This temporary commission guides and advises the City on downtown revitalization by coordinating stakeholders, overseeing the West Washington Street concept plan, and recommending planning and regulatory strategies that support activation and reinvestment. Members help shape a more vibrant, connected, and welcoming downtown district.
Historical Preservation Commission
This commission identifies, protects, and promotes West Chicago’s historic and architectural resources by advising the Mayor and City Council, designating landmarks and historic districts, reviewing proposed changes to protected properties, and educating the community. The City is seeking individuals with experience or interest in archaeology, architecture, building construction, engineering, finance, historic preservation, history, law, planning, or real estate.
Volunteering on a board or commission is an opportunity to share your expertise, connect with fellow residents, and play a direct role in shaping the community you call home.
Community members interested in serving on a Board or Commission are encouraged to complete a Boards and Commissions Application form. Completed applications may be submitted to the Office of the Mayor at [email protected].
This National Volunteer Month, we thank all who serve and invite others to join in building a stronger West Chicago.
