EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – In honor of May Day and labor history, Chippewa Singing Resistance invited the community to join them for a celebration at Phoenix Park.
Guest speakers addressed the beginning of May Day as a worker’s movement, current working conditions and how the rising cost of living is impacting families.
The United Universalist Congregation’s Justice Choir led community members in song.
Organizers hope to provide hope and resilience in a difficult time for many families.
“When I come to these events or start singing with this group, I feel like community. I think that’s something that they forget, that like, organizing, getting together and being a collective entity is powerful, and that’s, again, what May Day is about,” said Sy Neville, organizer.
Singing Resistance began in Minneapolis as a form of nonviolent protest. The local Chippewa Valley chapter says anyone is welcome to join.
