BOARDMAN Dozens of participants laced up their tennis shoes on Saturday for the 12th annual “NFStrong 5K” that supports individuals and families battling neurofibromatosis.

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a rare genetic disorder where tumors grow underneath the skin in mild or severe forms. The disease affects over 120,00 Americans and can occur in people of all ages.

There are three different forms of neurofibromatosis: NF1, NF2 and schwannomatosis. NF1 is most common type that develops in childhood, NF2 affects nerves linked to hearing and balance and schwannomatosis is the rarest form that directly impacts the nervous system.

The event, hosted by NF Network, included a 5K walk/run, a basket raffle and a time to share and spread awareness of the disease.

Jenn Krawchyk, the Ohio Walk Chair for NF Network started this 5K over 10 years ago after her son was diagnosed with NF1 as an infant. Her goal is to give knowledge and support to other families that are affected by the genetic disorder.

Krawchyk said she is greatful for the unwavering support of surrounding communities and beyond that come out to the race year after year.

“Our local community here has been wonderful. I have people coming from Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, and as far a ways of Cleveland and even Pennsylvania,” said Krawchyk.

Funds that are raised from the event go towards spreading NF awareness nationwide, help with research funding and to assist families with treatment costs.
