Legendary Sci-Fi Franchise Returning With New Stories After 6 Year Absence

Now more than ever, humanity is acutely aware of just how hard it is to kill artificial intelligence, so it should come as no surprise that The Terminator franchise has been announced for another resurrection.

Per a Dynamite Entertainment press release, the universe first founded by James Cameron in 1984 will take life on the comic book page, where it’s otherwise been thriving since 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate film. After a year of well-reviewed Terminator comics written by Declan Shalvey (Old Dog, Alien, ThunderCats), a spin-off series, Terminator: Metal, co-written by Shalvey and Irish writer Rory McConville, has been officially green-lit for this October.

Terminator: Dark Fate’s commendable 70% critics’ score and 82% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes weren’t enough to outweigh an underwhelming box office return and buoy the saga’s on-screen future. But a licensing partnership between Dynamite Entertainment and STUDIOCANAL unveiled at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con gave the popular sci-fi franchise another lease on life.

Shalvey’s Terminator series refreshed the franchise with a depiction of Skynet’s globe-spanning efforts in the fallout of their failure to snuff out the Connors. Terminator: Metal will have a more singular vision. “Given the prospect of a new series, the opportunity for more ideas and different stories was too exciting to turn down,” affirmed Shalvey. “With Metal, we’re looking to apply the same approach as the previous series, but with more of a focus on the struggles during The Future War. The locations may be different, but the stark, emotive and desolate storytelling remains the same.”

“While continuing to explore Skynet’s machinations throughout history, we’re also taking readers deeper into the Future War era than ever before,” said newly-assigned writer McConville in the press release. “Each issue will be a standalone tale that delves into the triumphs and tragedies of those caught in the eternal war with the machines, and the struggle to hold onto their humanity after the world has ended.” The Terminator: Metal press release teased the following premise for the series:

In the post-apocalyptic wastelands that follow the fateful Judgment Day, humanity scraps together any ways they can in their fight for survival. The existential battle for a future for humans leads to the use of every tool available — and that includes a Terminator itself! The character at the center of this tale is an engineer named Percy Dalton, who sets out on a mission accompanied by his perhaps not so trusty buddy “Tex.” After all, the wisdom of keeping your friends close, and your enemies closer may have never been more fitting.

A rotation of artists will join the title, including Lorenzo Re, covers by Shalvey himself, Sebastian Piriz, and Ivan Tao. No exact October release date has been revealed at press time.
