A 26-year-old man who was shot while trying to break up a fight inside a pizza restaurant in Wilmington on Saturday evening has died, police said.

Officers responded to a reported shooting at Red West Pizza on Pacific Coast Highway just before 6 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police say the man attempted to intervene while two women were fighting when the suspect pulled out a gun and shot several times, striking the 26-year-old and another man.

Both victims were taken to the hospital, where the 26-year-old was pronounced deceased, the LAPD said. Officials said the second victim has non-life-threatening injuries.

The gunman, described as a man in his early- to mid-20s, left on foot quickly after the shooting, according to the LAPD. Around 9:15 p.m., police told NBCLA a possible suspect was detained for questioning but was unable to confirm if an arrest had been made.

The investigation is ongoing.
