San Diego County was lightly shaken late Saturday and early Sunday by a series of small, connected earthquakes that originated in the Brawley area of Imperial County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The strongest shaking was produced by a 4.7 temblor that occurred at 12:10 a.m. Sunday on a highly active fault that extends from the southern end of the San Andreas system to Brawley, a desert community 127 miles east of San Diego.
USGS data indicates that most of the shaking happened in the Cleveland National Forest and near the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego County. Clusters of small quakes are common in Southern California and rarely lead to a much larger event.
