DELAND, Fla. — Jacksonville dropped the rubber game of its weekend series against Stetson on Sunday afternoon, falling 9-6 at Melching Field.
After rallying to tie the game at four in the sixth inning, play was halted for over two hours due to lightning in the area. Once play resumed, the Hatters responded with a four-run bottom half to regain control of the game.
How It Happened
Jacksonville struck first in the opening inning after Roger Vergara worked a walk and Derek Bermudez drove a double over the left fielder’s head to score him from first. Stetson answered quickly with three runs in the bottom half, highlighted by a two-run homer from Yohann Dessureault.
The Hatters added another run in the third before the Dolphins chipped away. Logan Baratta scored on a Blake Edmonds sacrifice fly in the fifth, then Jacksonville tied the game in the sixth behind RBI singles from Baratta and Conner Spelman.
Following the weather delay, Stetson broke the tie with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth. The Hatters added another insurance run in the seventh. Jacksonville made one final push in the eighth when Edmonds lined a two-RBI single to left, but the Dolphins were unable to get any closer.
Bermudez, Baratta and Spelman each recorded multi-hit games, while Spelman extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
With the loss, Jacksonville moves to 27-23 overall and 14-13 in ASUN play. The Dolphins will return to DeLand in nine days for the ASUN Championship Tournament.
