PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two teenagers are in police custody after officers said they stole a car at gunpoint in the city’s Oxford Circle section and crashed a short time later in Frankford.
It was shortly before 11 p.m. Monday, according to authorities, when the two teens — one armed with a handgun and the other a knife — pointed their weapons at two women in their 30s on the 2100 block of Longshore Avenue, near Bustleton Avenue in Oxford Circle.
Police said the teens, ages 16 and 18, demanded the keys to the victims’ 2012 Jeep Cherokee, then fled in the vehicle.
Officers saw the Cherokee moments later and it sped off, eventually colliding with a pickup truck at Adams and Torresdale avenues in Frankford. Police said the suspects tried to flee on foot but were caught nearby. One was reportedly snared in barbed wire in a backyard fence.
The carjacking victims and the driver of the truck were not injured, and police said they recovered a handgun from inside the stolen car.
