The county Medical Examiner’s Office has identified three people killed earlier this month in two separate crashes in Santa Ysabel and Jacumba Hot Springs.
Randy Arredondo, 26, and Rene Arredondo Jr., 26, both of Alamo, Texas, died May 3 when the driver of the GMC Sierra they were passengers in fell asleep at the wheel, causing the truck to crash into a center median on east Interstate 8 near Carrizo Gorge Road, county investigators said.
The two passengers were wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the pickup. They died before they could be taken to a hospital.
The pickup’s driver, a 20-year-old man who was wearing a seatbelt, was taken to a hospital with injuries believed not to be life-threatening.
Joan Marie Smith, 76, died when the Toyota Tocama she was driving crashed into a Toyota Corolla making a left turn onto state Route 79 from state Route 76 around 12:55 p.m. on May 6, investigators said.
The pickup overturned multiple times, veered off the roadway, went down an embankment and crashed into a tree, CHP officials said.
Smith died at the scene.
