Eastern State Penitentiary is inviting visitors to reflect, learn, and engage this May with a powerful lineup of programs as part of its ongoing “A Time for Liberty” initiative. The Eastern State Penitentiary’s May 2026 events bring together thought-provoking discussions, hands-on preservation activities, and immersive tours that highlight the lasting impact of incarceration on society today.

At the core of the month’s programming is the popular Justice 101 series, which tackles complex topics through meaningful public conversations. One standout event, Philly Saves: Adaptive Reuse of Sites of Memory and Trauma on May 21, explores how historically significant places—from prisons to churches—can be transformed into spaces for healing, dialogue, and community life. Another key discussion, Faith, Reentry, and Prison Reform on May 27, examines how faith communities contribute to rehabilitation and reintegration, offering a thoughtful look at justice 250 years after the nation’s founding.

Additional Justice 101 programs include a virtual session on May 13 that dives into the origins of solitary confinement, as well as the May 20 discussion Dying on the Inside, which focuses on the realities of aging and long-term incarceration for women. These programs connect past practices to ongoing conversations about reform, policy, and human impact.

Beyond discussions, visitors can experience Eastern State in new ways during the Memorial Day Weekend Preservation Fest on May 23–24. This special event goes beyond the traditional tour, offering exclusive access to preservation efforts and rarely seen areas of the historic site. Guests can participate in hands-on activities like masonry demonstrations, a LEGO design challenge inspired by the penitentiary’s architecture, and interactive exhibits that uncover surprising artifacts from the site’s past.

May also marks the start of the Finding Freedom Civic Season, running through September 7. This extended programming invites visitors to explore the evolution of one of America’s most influential prisons and its connection to modern social issues. From guided tours on civil rights, solitary confinement, and general history to creative activities like zine-making, poetry writing, and a “Promises of Freedom” Wish Wall, there are engaging experiences for all ages.

According to President and CEO Dr. Kerry Sautner, this month’s events are designed to create opportunities for reflection and connection. By blending history with contemporary dialogue, Eastern State continues to offer a space where visitors can better understand the past—and its ongoing influence on today’s world.

Whether attending a Justice 101 discussion or exploring Preservation Fest, the Eastern State Penitentiary May 2026 events provide meaningful ways to engage with history, justice, and community.
