Since opening in 2024, Buena Gente Barbershop has been bringing the culture of southeast San Antonio to Main Street in Boerne. At some point between the start of Fiesta season and the Spurs’ latest playoff push, that culture began to catch on in a big way.

The Hill Country barbershop has been gaining popularity for its stylish Spurs-themed haircuts, helping the San Antonio team’s fans show off their 210 pride through detailed logos and sharp Silver and Black-inspired designs.

Owner Angel Aguilar tells MySA it’s about more than just basketball. After selling his two San Antonio shops and relocating to Boerne, the barbershop has become a touchpoint for 210 identity in the rapidly growing Hill Country town, something he hopes will continue to expand.

“It’s not just basketball. It’s not just the Spurs. It’s the whole background of the Spurs and who we are — a big Hispanic scene,” he said.

The barbershop owner said he immediately connected with Boerne when he and his wife moved to town a few years ago.

“It was welcoming. I fell in love with the town,” he shared.

But there was something missing, not only for him but for other San Antonians who have relocated to the Hill Country.

The main barber behind the custom hairdos is RJ Martinez, whose designs have him tapering at least three to four Spurs cuts a day. He said most of his clients are San Antonians trekking up to Boerne for a cut.

“There’s nobody catching up to the kid; he’s really talented,” Aguilar said about Martinez.

The custom hair designs started out as a bit of friendly competition between the barbers, progressing from a simple spur to more complex shadings and even some color, Aguilar noted.

“Everybody can cut, but RJ blew it out the park,” he said.

While the catchy designs have helped the barbershop “pop off” in recent weeks, Aguilar said the growing popularity reflects something deeper than just sports fandom.

“It’s just being prideful of where you’re from and where you’re at,” he said. “We did it for the culture. It’s not just for us, it’s for the city.”

If you haven’t gotten your custom cut yet, no worries! The barbershop owner said he believes you’ll have plenty of time to show off a Spurs-themed haircut of your own.

“I do believe we’re going to take it home. We’re going to go all the way,” Aguilar said.

Martinez’s haircuts at Buena Gente Barbershop cost $35 a head, and design add-ons range from $10-$50.
