One of the two people arrested for allegedly stealing a bottle of cognac valued at $4,000 from a Tempe restaurant was not involved in the incident, authorities said Wednesday.

Channel Miller, 34, and her husband, 32-year-old Matthew Steve, turned themselves in for the theft from Three Thirty Three on Tuesday, according to the Tempe Police Department.

However, investigators later found evidence that cleared Miller of involvement.

Steve was booked on a felony theft charge, and both he and Miller were released from custody.

What happened $4,000 bottle of cognac stolen from Tempe restaurant?

The 750-milliliter bottle of Louis XIII cognac was stolen just after 9 p.m. on May 4 by a couple who just dined at the restaurant on Scottsdale Road just north of Tempe Town Lake, police said. A woman allegedly stole the bottle while a man acted as a lookout.

Three days later, two unidentified individuals returned the bottle to the restaurant before running off.

The theft was captured on the restaurant’s surveillance cameras, which also recorded images of the SUV the couple used to leave the area, police said.

Police said the incident may have been associated with a criminal group known to target businesses in theft- and fraud-related crimes across the country.
