After setting records in last week’s CIF San Diego Section swim finals, two Torrey Pines High School girls relay teams are among the favorites to win state championships.
The Falcons hold the top seed in the 200-yard freestyle relay and second in the 400 freestyle relay in the CIF state meet, which began Thursday with diving events and runs through Saturday at Clovis West High School in Clovis, near Fresno.
A week ago, Torrey Pines rewrote the 200 freestyle relay section record for the fifth time in three years, posting a time of 1 minute, 33.76 seconds.
The quartet includes senior star Aya Ferguson, junior Anita Qian, sophomore Carolyn Han and senior Katrina Weitfeldt.
In the 400 freestyle relay, sophomore Scarlett Zhang takes the place of Han for the Falcons (3:24.36).
Ferguson also has a final chance to challenge for the section record in the 100 freestyle as the 10th seed (50.38). The future Northwestern swimmer owns a personal best from last year (49.83) that’s only 14 hundredths of a second off the record.
To complete her slate, Ferguson (1:49.30) is seeded 12th in the 200 freestyle, while Granite Hills sophomore Ella Morgan holds the seventh seed with a time of 1:49.15.
Another record bid is due by Mt. Carmel senior Catherine Rowe, looking to surpass her own mark of 53.44 set in last year’s section finals. She’s seeded seventh after posting a time of 54.62.
Point Loma junior Alex Pletcher likewise is seeking to improve the boys’ 200 freestyle record of 1:35.63 established in the state meet last year, when he finished second. He is seeded fifth with a time of 1:37.22. Pletcher is also taking part in the 100 butteffly as the 10th seed (48.28).
Grossmont sophomore Aramis Willett (47.58) holds the fifth seed in the 100 butterfly after tying for sixth place (48.91) a year ago. Torrey Pines senior transfer Charlie Hall, who recorded twin wins in the Division 1 section meet, is looking to contend as the 10th seed in the 50 freestyle (20.37) and 12th seed in the 100 freestyle (45.02). With Hall as the anchor, Torrey Pines set the section record in the 200 free relay (1:23.99) to garner the state’s eighth seed.
Canyon Hills freshman Addison Hou is seeded eighth (1:49.28) in the boys’ 200 individual medley. Canyon Crest senior Darmen Yessengeldy has the seventh seed (48.68) in the 100 back after placing fifth last year. The last local state champion was Torrey Pines’ Logan Noguchi, who won both the 100 fly and 100 breaststroke two years ago.
It’s a record
Upon further review, Classical Academy senior Braden Guzman has been recognized for setting the CIF San Diego Section record in the boys’ 100-yard breaststroke.
The record was listed as 54.33 seconds, but an archive check days after Saturday’s section finals determined the mark was actually 55.53, set by Canyon Crest’s Andrew Ko in 2022. Guzman (55.52) thus broke the record by 1/100th of a second.
The future SMU swimmer set the 200 IM record with a time of 1:46.48 after first doing so in the prelims (1:47.93).
