ALPENA, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU)— Three athletes from Northeast Michigan are set to make history as the first Alpena gymnasts to compete at the AAU Junior Olympics in Houston, Texas, next week.
Brooke Smith, Callie Brousseau, and Faith Dragiewicz, who have been involved in gymnastics since childhood, will represent their hometown on the national stage.
These seniors recently took gold in their respective events at the National Championships in Florida last month, showcasing their exceptional talent and dedication to the sport.
“The biggest thing we know, and they know this, is that gymnastics for us is not just to produce fantastic gymnasts; it is to create strong women,” said Geri Samp, their gymnastics coach. “And I can honestly say these three girls are extremely strong, emotionally, mentally, and physically. And that is going to carry into everything they do.”
The team is scheduled to fly out on Wednesday of next week and will compete in their respective events the following day.
