RECORD: 1-3
This four-game stretch in the border battle was best described as a little weird, but oddly competitive for the most part. Current Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart and Muschamp arrived at both schools the same year.
It started in 2016 with a game that was moved to Sunday afternoon (the last time Carolina will have played on a Sunday before the opener this coming season) because of weather. Beamer was the special teams coordinator at the time and late in the contest, the Gamecocks had rallied to within 21-14 and set up for an on-sides kick. The television broadcast panned to Beamer drawing up a return on the wipe board. Georgia returned it to salt away the game and play-by-play announcer Bent Musburger, who now works for the Vegas Stats and Information Network, sounded a bit disappointed because the Bulldogs covered.
Carolina gave the 2017 near National Champions all they wanted in Athens the following year in a 24-10 loss. Georgia smacked the 2018 Gamecocks into reality with a 41-17 win in Columbia on CBS the following year.
Then in 2019, led by a salty defense and thanks to constant heroics from Israel Mukuamu (now with the Dallas Cowboys) who had three interceptions, the Gamecocks shocked the No. 3 Bulldogs, 20-17, in two overtimes in Athens. UGA has not lost a game at Sanford Stadium since.
Prior to that game, Muschamp was a combined 1-6 against his alma mater at both Florida and Carolina, but he went out a winner against the program he would return to in 2021 after being fired seven games in to the 2020 season by the Gamecocks.
