According to Instagram user zslwhipsnadezoo, who posted this adorable video, in addition to being still cute and fun to watch, aardvarks are actually a very important part of the ecosystem in their natural habitat, because of their digging.
They wrote, “Aardvark burrows play an important role in protecting wildlife during high temperatures and wildfires, providing refuge for around 27 other species, including hyenas, African wild dogs, and porcupines.”
Aardvarks Are Fascinating Creatures
Aardvarks are mammals that are native to the continent of Africa. These “earth pigs” have mighty claws and powerful hind legs that they can use to burrow underground to find termite mounds, and they will use their long snouts to suck up termites.
Their rabbit-like ears and kangaroo tail make them some of the more interesting creatures that anyone could ever hope to lay eyes on. Interestingly, when aardvarks give birth, their babies come into the world looking like saggy, wet donkeys.
They can also grow to be pretty big. They can be up to 3.5 to 4.5 feet tall and more than 7 feet long from the end of their snout to the tip of their tail! And they can weigh up to nearly 180 pounds.
They are very slow creatures, and they are prey animals as well, with big cats, African wild dogs, pythons, and occasionally humans all posing a threat to them. However, they are not an endangered species, with the IUCN classifying them as “least concern.”
These master diggers are also very elusive creatures and are pretty spread out across sub-Saharan Africa, which often keeps them safe from different issues in various regions.
