PHILADELPHIA – The continuing carousel of pitchers continues for the Philadelphia Phillies as the team tries to piecemeal a plan for the fifth spot in the starting rotation that has been vacated with rookie Andrew Painter being sent down earlier in the week.
Interim manager Don Mattingly confirmed after Sunday’s 6-2 series-clinching win over the New York Mets that the team DFA’d reliever Bryse Wilson and optioned Max Lazar to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Don Mattingly said postgame the starting pitcher is “still TBD” for tomorrow.

Wilson signed with the Phillies in December and then was released on June 3. He quickly resigned with the team on June 5 returning to Lehigh Valley. The 28-year-old swingman made his first appearance with the Phillies on Thursday in a 6-4 loss to the Mets in the series opener. He pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and allowing a walk.
Wilson has pitched in parts of eight seasons in the big leagues, posting a 4.80 ERA in 463 innings.
Lazar was recalled to the Phillies on Tuesday and made three appearances out of the bullpen, tossing four innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits with zero walks and four strikeouts. He did show some positive signs as a potential arm to earn another call-up if the Phillies suffer more injuries to the bullpen.
Mattingly said that Monday’s starting pitcher for the series opener against the Washington Nationals was “still TBD.” However, Alan Rangel would be the most likely candidate to join the team in the nation’s capital.
He matched up with Painter’s schedule with the IronPigs. However, in his last start, Rangel was touched up for four earned runs on six hits in five innings of work. He walked three, struck out four and allowed a home run.
Overall on the season with Lehigh Valley, the swingman has been working in the rotation and bullpen, making 14 total appearances with 11 starts, posting a 3.99 ERA in 70 innings of work with 73 strikeouts.
Rangel has made six total appearances in the big leagues over the last two seasons, including a three-inning appearance back on April 22 at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs, where he gave up an earned run on three hits with five strikeouts.
Last season, the 28-year-old made five appearances with the Phillies holding his own, posting a 2.45 ERA in 11 innings, allowing 10 hits and three earned runs with six walks and eight strikeouts.
