A water main break left some Richmonders with little to no water overnight, according to the Department of Public Utilities.

At around 1:30 a.m. on Friday, the DPU noticed low water pressure in its distribution system. Crews responded, confirming a water main break on a 36-inch line that runs parallel to the canal.

As a result of this, some customers in portions of the city experienced low or no pressure, which resulted in no water.

Crews were able to isolate the main and restore water to some impacted customers within a few hours, according to a release from the DPU. As of 10:30 a.m. on Friday, some customers were still experiencing low water pressure.

“It is important for customers to know that drinking water remains safe,” read the statement from the DPU.

The department reportedly coordinated with regional partners to divert flow from Henrico to allow crews to assess the problem. Upon investigation, the department confirmed that extensive repairs will be needed, and will likely take several weeks to complete.

During that time, the DPU assures customers that it will continue to maintain service, and water disruption is not anticipated.

Customers can receive updates on these repairs through CivicReady and on the city’s website.
