MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – You know what they smell like, and they’re popping up more often. There have been reports of skunks invading people’s garages recently in the U.P.
The Department of Natural Resources says it’s best to keep your garage, and the lid to your trash can, closed. It also recommends avoiding feeding your pet outside because skunks love pet food.
DNR Wildlife Biologist Brian Roell says you should never try to help a skunk on your own and to call the DNR instead.
“We do have, sometimes, well-intentioned people that think they find a baby skunk that’s abandoned or injured or something like that. You should never handle skunks, and really any wildlife, but skunks in particular just because the chance they could carry rabies.”
If your pet gets sprayed by a skunk, Roell says a solution of dish soap, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda can get rid of the smell.
