The Los Angeles Police Department was on a citywide tactical alert for nearly four hours Tuesday evening because of a downtown protest calling for consequences after two people were killed by immigration officers within a week.
The protesters gathered at Olvera Street with signs reading “Jail All Killer ICE Agents,” “End Impunity for Killer ICE!” and “Justice for Lorenzo,” the latter referring to the shooting death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during an immigration arrest in Houston July 7.
The citywide tactical alert began around 6 p.m. Tuesday and was canceled at 9:53 p.m., Officer David Cuellar told City News Service. It required all on-duty officers to remain on their shifts past the time they were scheduled to end.
Cuellar did not know whether the tactical alert was due to the number of protesters or concern the demonstration would be come unruly.
Metro alerted riders that buses would be detoured from Los Angeles Street between First Street and Cesar Chavez Avenue and stops in the area would not be served until midnight due to the demonstration.
