Two toddlers hospitalized after separate near-drownings in Scottsdale, Mesa

  • July 26, 2026

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — Two toddlers are recovering after separate near-drowning incidents at backyard pools in the East Valley, officials said.

Paramedics were first called out just before 8 p.m. Friday near Guadalupe and Ellsworth roads after a report that a 3-year-old child had been pulled from a backyard pool.

Family members pulled the child from the water before crews arrived and began CPR, according to the Mesa Fire and Medical Department.

Firefighters said the child regained consciousness within seconds and was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The child is expected to be OK.

On Saturday morning just before 10 a.m., first responders were called on reports of a 3-year-old boy found face down in a backyard swimming pool.

The child had already been removed from the water, and CPR was underway when paramedics arrived. He was taken to a local children’s hospital and was breathing and alert.

The incidents are important reminders to stay vigilant around water, especially during the summer months.

  • Always provide constant, undistracted adult supervision when children are in or near water.
  • Designate a “Water Watcher” whose only job is to watch children in the pool.
  • Install barriers, self-closing and self-latching gates, and secure pool fencing.
  • Learn CPR—it can save a life while waiting for emergency responders.
  • Empty buckets, kiddie pools, and other containers after use, and keep pool gates closed and locked.

Today, July 25, is also World Drowning Prevention Day, which is coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO).

“An estimated 236,000 people drown every year, and drowning is among the ten leading causes of death for children aged 5-14 years,” WHO officials said.
