PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Drivers in north Phoenix and Gilbert will need extra time and should find alternate routes this weekend because of freeway closures.
The westbound Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway will close between Interstate 17 and 51st Avenue from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for a widening project. The Interstate 17 ramps to westbound Loop 101 will also be closed.
Drivers can use Union Hills Drive or Bell Road to get around the closure.
In the East Valley, the westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway will be shut down between Williams Field and Gilbert roads from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for a widening project. The westbound Loop 202 on-ramp at Higley Road will also be closed. Drivers can use Higley Road to Germann Road or Williams Field Road as possible alternate routes for drivers.
Also in the East Valley, all Loop 101 ramps to the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway in the Tempe area will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for a pavement improvement project. The southbound Loop 101 on-ramp at McKellips Road will also be closed.
Alternate routes include McKellips Road, Alma School Road, Scottsdale Road and Rural Road to get around the closure.
State Route 51 northbound will be narrowed to two lanes between Northern Avenue and Shea Boulevard between 9 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday as workers improve the pavement. The northbound SR 51 on-ramp at Shea Boulevard will be closed. I-17 is a possible alternate route to avoid the construction altogether.
This is in addition to the northbound side of SR 51 being narrowed to two lanes between Highland Avenue and Camelback Road for a repair project that will last until the fall.
