PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Heavy winds helped flame a fast-moving fire that engulfed several power poles and buildings in south Phoenix late Monday night.
Around 10:45 p.m., Phoenix firefighters received reports of a pole fire near 8th Street and Southern Avenue. Crews found multiple power poles on fire when they arrived, with heavy winds pushing the flames to nearby buildings.
Three structures, brush, trees, debris and power poles were scorched from the blaze. Firefighters used handlines to attack different parts of the fire and the buildings, attempting to surround the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.

Due to the fire’s size and the strong winds, more firefighters and resources were requested. Crews eventually contained the flames despite the difficult conditions.
A neighbor said he had to quickly get his elderly mother out of her home before the flames spread further.
“About 10:45 my neighbor called and said, ‘Could be a fire by your mom’s house.’ I came out, I just saw a blaze. I mean, an inferno. So I immediately got my mom out, her dog, and got them safe to my house. My field caught fire,” he said.
Officials say the three buildings were vacant, so no one will be displaced. No firefighters were hurt.
“Fire crews were faced with strong winds feeding the blaze, but firefighters did an amazing job containing the fire,” said Phoenix Fire Capt. DJ Lee.
Salt River Project (SRP) crews were out at the site early Tuesday morning repairing the damaged power poles.
Arizona’s Family drone video shows the burnt buildings left behind, including several holes burned through the roofs.
Investigators are working to determine what initially sparked the fire.
