2:00 p.m. — With veteran Cowboys special teams ace CJ Goodwin retiring earlier this offseason, Dallas in need of a new face for the third phase of the game. On Wednesday, special teams coordinator Nick Sorensen said the team is taking a by-committee approach to filling Goodwin’s shoes.
“I think we’ve got guys that are still really young, but that have done a lot of cool things for us like a [Ryan Flournoy], Brevyn [Spann-Ford], Marist [Liufau], even Shemar James did well as a rookie,” Sorensen said. “Markquese [Bell] has been around. We added PJ Locke who’s been in the league a while. I think it’s more by committee right now.”
“I think CJ was kind of established as that guy that’s been the leader and been the old head. We’ve got a good mixture of guys that I think are sort of in that mid-20s age range to where they’re comfortable, but they’re also bringing up the young guys… it’s been cool to see them challenge each other.”
Brian Schottenheimer said earlier this week that Spann-Ford, Flournoy and Hunter Luepke had stood out to him as guys who could fill a role like Goodwin’s on special teams. There’s still time for players to further emerge, but for now, they’ll work together as a unit to improve and try and fill Goodwin’s void in 2026.
