Actor, writer-director, and full-time buddy of Rian Johnson, Noah Segan has seemingly done fans of the ’90s independent film scene an enormous solid with his sophomore feature. The Only Living Pickpocket in New York is an in-over-his-head crime movie starring John Turturro as an old-school thief who stole more than he bargained for with his latest lift.

The film, which debuted to good reviews at Sundance, just dropped its first trailer ahead of a release this fall, so here’s everything you need to know about The Only Living Pickpocket in New York.

The TrailerThe Official Synopsis

Harry Lehman (John Turturro) is an aging pickpocket who plies his trade with ever-diminishing returns in a drastically changed New York. Wallets stuffed with cash have been replaced by easily canceled credit cards, and Harry struggles to make ends meet as he cares for his disabled wife, Rosie. When he unwittingly purloins and fences a valuable USB stick, Harry finds himself in a race against time to return the loot or face the rage of a vengeful crime family.

The Cast

Turturro leads an ensemble studded with two other majors stars of the ’90s indie scene. Co-stars of his from Barton Fink and Do the Right Thing — Steve Buscemi and Giancarlo Esposito, respectively — show up in supporting performances. The rest of the cast includes Tatiana Maslany, Jamie Lee Curtis, Will Price, and Victoria Moroles.

The Creative Team

The Only Living Pickpocket in New York is the second directorial effort from Noah Segan, who also wrote the script. Previously, he wrote and directed the vampire horror-comedy Blood Relatives.

The Awards Chances

Wanna hear something messed up? John Turturro has never been nominated for an Academy Award, despite worthy turns in Barton Fink, Miller’s Crossing, Quiz Show, and too many others. That’s the kind of overdue that the Oscars are liable to recognize, especially for a showcase like The Only Living Pickpocket in New York.
