A Lake County man died after multiple gunmen opened fire on him at a bus stop in Chicago, leaving him shot multiple times and a woman also wounded, police officials said.
The Chicago Police Department said the incident happened around 12:38 p.m. on July 31 in the 3400 block of West 16th Street in Chicago.
A male victim was standing near the street when he was approached by two unknown vehicles.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim earlier this week as Prentiss Smith, 27, of North Chicago.
Multiple offenders from within the vehicles produced firearms and fired shots at Smith, police said.
Smith suffered multiple shots to his body and was transported by the Chicago Fire Department to Mt. Sinai Hospital.
The medical examiner’s office said that Smith later died at the hospital.
An autopsy performed showed Smith suffered multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide.
Police said a 56-year-old woman standing near the immediate area was also struck by gunfire from the suspects.
She suffered two gunshot wounds to the back and was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital in fair condition.
Video from the scene showed a CTA bus stop with yellow and red crime scene tape around it and the roadway on the corner of 16th Street and Homan Avenue.
Several windows of the bus stop shelter were shattered from the gunfire and personal belongings were strewn around the scene.
Chicago Police Department Area Four detectives are investigating the case and no arrests have been announced.
