Image credit: Mar\u00eda de los \u00c1ngeles Miceli Baro.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/viviparity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Viviparity<\/a> is an important acquisition in mammalian evolution, characteristic of modern therians and thought to have played a key role in their evolutionary success,\u201d said Dr. Leandro Gaetano, a paleontologist at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET), and his colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis reproductive mode contrasts with oviparity, the plesiomorphic condition for vertebrates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNevertheless, viviparity has evolved independently more than 150 times among vertebrates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExtant therians share a complex array of coadapted features \u2014 such as placentation, lactation, and its endocrine regulation \u2014 that suggest that viviparity is a synapomorphy of the clade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonotremes, despite presenting some sort of placentation (i.e., absorption of oviductal secretions as opposed to the yolk sac or chorioallantoic types of placenta present in therians), lay eggs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In their study, the researchers examined the fossilized remains of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chiniquodon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Chiniquodon theotonicus<\/a>, a cat-sized cynodont that lived during the Triassic period in what is now northwestern Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>They examined thin slices of the animal\u2019s femur and ulna under a microscope and discovered a distinct transition in the bone tissue near the center of each bone \u2014 a \u2018neonatal line\u2019 marking the moment of birth, a feature well documented in living mammals but never before identified in such an ancient, non-mammalian relative.<\/p>\n<p>By measuring the bone\u2019s circumference at this line, they estimated the animal\u2019s body mass at birth: roughly 1.68 kg, compared with nearly 12 kg as a full-grown adult.<\/p>\n<p>This means the newborn weighed between 10 and 20% of its adult body mass, a proportion far closer to that of modern placental mammals than to egg-laying reptiles, birds, or even marsupials and monotremes, which produce comparatively tiny offspring.<\/p>\n<p>Statistical analysis comparing the fossil to nearly 1,900 mammal, 2,600 reptile, and 780 bird species consistently classified the ancient creature alongside placental mammals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe show for the first time that live birth was present in at least one mammalian ancestor, Chiniquodon theotonicus, which lived approximately 236 million years ago,\u201d Dr. Gaetano said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis implies that viviparity among early cynodonts originated in the mammalian lineage at least 95 to 90 million years earlier than previously thought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The findings challenge the long-held assumption that all non-mammalian cynodonts laid eggs, and that live birth arose only once, within the therian mammals that gave rise to modern placentals and marsupials.<\/p>\n<p>The scientists propose two equally plausible evolutionary scenarios: either live birth evolved independently in Chiniquodon theotonicus\u2019 lineage and again later in therian mammals, or it arose just once, early in mammalian ancestry, with egg-laying monotremes such as the platypus representing a later reversal back to the ancestral condition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is very well possible that Chiniquodon theotonicus does not represent an isolated case of viviparity among cynodonts,\u201d Dr. Gaetano said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could be evidence of the general switch from laying eggs to giving birth to live young early on in the mammalian lineage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we need more evidence to test this hypothesis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill, it looks like some cynodonts were in fact very similar to present-day mammals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/mammal-science\/articles\/10.3389\/fmamm.2026.1845319\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">study<\/a> was published today in the journal Frontiers in Mammal Science.<\/p>\n<p>_____<\/p>\n<p>Leandro Carlos Gaetano et al. 2026.
