Deputy Superintendent of Operations Oz Hill announced the plan in a letter to the Kensington High School community Thursday.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know this is disappointing news, but the health and safety of our students, staff, and workers is our first priority,\u201d Hill wrote.\n  <\/p>\n<p>The installation of a new HVAC system at Kensington High School was halted after an asbestos inspector \u201cidentified a concern about demolishing the old system,\u201d Hill wrote in his letter. A teacher had recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/philadelphia\/2026\/08\/04\/52-philadelphia-schools-do-not-have-adequate-cooling\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">described the HVAC renovation project to Chalkbeat<\/a> as \u201clike things were being figured out on the fly.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Hill said details about the \u201cschedule, transportation, and all logistics\u201d of Kensington High\u2019s move to Meehan would be forthcoming.\n<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the School District of Philadelphia became the <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/school-district-of-philadelphia-asbestos-charges\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first in the country to be criminally charged<\/a> over its \u201cknowing and willful\u201d violation of federal asbestos management law. An agreement the district signed with the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office in order to defer prosecution described the presence of asbestos, closures due to asbestos, late inspections and delayed reporting in 31 schools, including Kensington High School.
