The Bexar County Republican Party is questioning whether Independent candidate for Bexar County District Attorney Jason Wolff actually collected the 500 signatures needed to appear on the November ballot.<\/p>\n

The accusations played out in 225th District Court on Thursday when a notary who works at the Calfas Law Firm, Wolff\u2019s employer, pleaded the Fifth Amendment when asked whether the circulator of his petition \u2014 a person who collects signatures for a citizen-initiated ballot measure \u2014\u00a0ever appeared before her and swore witness to the document being signed.<\/p>\n

Wolff was unavailable for immediate comment.<\/p>\n

During the hearing, Bexar County GOP representative Marian Stanko questioned the validity of Wolff\u2019s signatures based on a TikTok video he posted June. In that clip, the candidate urged those interested in supporting his candidacy to drive up to Peacock Alley downtown and \u201chonk their horn,\u201d at which point someone would come out with the petition for them to sign.<\/p>\n

During the hearing, District Judge Christine Vasquez Hortick ordered the notary to turning over the books. Attorney Justin Nichols, who\u2019s representing the Bexar County GOP in the complaint, will now examine each signature for irregularities. <\/p>\n

Wolff previously told the Current<\/a> he collected about 1,200 signatures, with the Texas Secretary of State verifying 710 of them. That means Nichols and the Bexar GOP will need to call into question at least 211 signatures if they file a suit to halt Wolff\u2019s candidacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt first glance, I think we get there,\u201d Nichols told the Current.<\/p>\n

In an unrelated incident<\/a>, troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety on Tuesday arrested attorney Neil Calfas, 56 \u2014\u00a0who employs Wolff and the notary boss \u2014\u00a0on charges of human trafficking and solicitation of prostitution.<\/p>\n

Following the arrest, Wolff told the Current that he\u2019s not involved, faces no charges and had no idea that Calfas was engaging in alleged illegal activity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m surprised by it, like it was to everybody else,\u201d Wolff said at the time.<\/p>\n

The Bexar County Republican officials also said their hearing wasn\u2019t related to the arrest and was already scheduled to occur. <\/p>\n
