That fear, however, created what we now know as the medical gender gap that has plagued women for decades.

The consequences still linger. Women remain underrepresented in research on major diseases, while studies have found their pain is more likely to be minimized or attributed to stress and anxiety.

Experts told The Post that many providers are not well trained in women’s hormones because of their highly individualized nature. And the gap appears particularly stark in midlife.

A 2026 study examining healthcare access across 29 countries found women reported poorer access than men in 24 of them, with disparities especially pronounced around age 50 — roughly when many women are navigating perimenopause and menopause.

A couple consults with a doctor about healthcare on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024. I didn’t take that, but he also said he was telling all patients that.”

Medical staff in consultation with a middle-aged couple on Friday, Nov. 27, 2015. they’ve navigated through what remains a biased healthcare system.

A 51-year-old in <a five OB-GYNs while experiencing insomnia, panic attacks, racing heart, depression, rage, heat intolerance, painful sex, and weight gain.

She said her latest doctor recommended a psychiatric consult and an SSRI rather than HRT.

“So many women, like my mother-in-law, have carried unnecessary pain and symptoms because of outdated information and fear-driven medical guidance,” wrote one woman on Facebook. “It’s devastating to think how different her life could’ve been if proper care and accurate data had guided decisions sooner.”

But for many women, hormone replacement therapy is life-changing.

HRT replaces hormones that decline around menopause, primarily estrogen and progesterone, and can ease symptoms ranging from hot flashes and night sweats to disrupted sleep and vaginal symptoms.

For some women, the impact is profound: patients increasingly describe treatment as giving them back the energy and sense of self they feared they’d lost.

But for decades, many women were scared away from it due to concerns about breast cancer and cardiovascular risks.

However, the FDA, which has recently begun removing the broad black box warnings, said women who initiate HRT within 10 years of the onset of menopause (generally before age 60) have a reduction in all-cause mortality and fractures, reduced cardiovascular diseases and Alzheimer’s by significant amounts.

This is a major shift for a generation of women who were taught to fear the treatment.

But changing decades of medical thinking may take longer than changing a warning label.

Duncan said part of the problem is that women’s hormonal health crosses multiple medical specialties — meaning patients can bounce between providers treating individual symptoms without anyone connecting the dots.

“Women’s health isn’t owned by any single specialty, which means too often it’s owned by none of them,” she said.

That gap has helped fuel a growing shift toward private and telehealth menopause care, where experts say women are seeking out providers with more time and specialized training to address symptoms they say have been overlooked in traditional doctors’ offices.

For a generation of women demanding better answers about what is happening to their bodies, that shift may be long overdue.

After all, it shouldn’t take a husband in the exam room to be believed.

A woman suffering from debilitating perimenopause symptoms says her doctor agreed to prescribe hormone replacement therapy —
