But apparently, negotiations never stopped and a deal could come together in the coming weeks, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/deals\/stripe-advent-in-talks-to-buy-paypal-ea6aa2ba?mod=e2tw\" target=\"_blank\">new reporting <\/a>by the WSJ, which cited unnamed sources. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PayPal declined to comment on the report. A Stripe spokesperson said the company doesn\u2019t \u201ccomment on rumors or speculation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The negotiations are taking place as Lores attempts to save the company <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/story\/2026-04-03\/paypal-transformed-digital-payments-now-fintech-leader-is-struggling\" target=\"_blank\">from its lagging trajectory<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lores joined PayPal in March, after spending years at HP. In April, Lores made the first moves in his <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.paypal-corp.com\/2026-04-29-PayPal-Announces-Strategic-Reorganization-to-Accelerate-Growth\" target=\"_blank\">turnaround plan<\/a>, including an executive shuffle and splitting the business into three operating models: checkout solutions and PayPal, consumer financial services (and Venmo), and payment services and crypto. A month later, Lores <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/05\/05\/paypal-says-its-becoming-a-technology-company-again-that-means-ai\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told investors<\/a> that PayPal would recommit to the fundamentals,\u201d which included \u201cbecoming a technology company again.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PayPal\u2019s turnaround will also include a cost-saving plans, which is expected to reduce its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-05-05\/paypal-plans-job-cuts-as-fintech-s-new-ceo-pursues-turnaround-strategy\" target=\"_blank\">workforce by 20% <\/a>over the next two to three years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PayPal was founded in 1998 by a number of men who went on to be Silicon Valley luminaries, including Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, Max Levchin, Luke Nosek, and others. The company <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/05\/08\/heres-whats-killing-paypals-stock-growth.html\" target=\"_blank\">has struggled<\/a> in recent years, after ballooning during the pandemic <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/05\/08\/heres-whats-killing-paypals-stock-growth.html\" target=\"_blank\">due to an e-commerce boom<\/a>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"PayPal CEO Enrique Lores\u2019 turnaround plan for the fintech company could include a sale \u2014 of itself.
