{"id":1002668,"date":"2026-08-15T16:10:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-15T16:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1002668\/"},"modified":"2026-08-15T16:10:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-15T16:10:14","slug":"could-this-addicting-drug-be-the-next-longevity-breakthrough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1002668\/","title":{"rendered":"Could this addicting drug be the \u2018next longevity breakthrough\u2019?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Could a notoriously habit-forming drug be a key to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/24\/health\/the-longest-humans-could-live-even-if-we-beat-aging-study\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prolonging life<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>The founder of the biohacking movement, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/06\/10\/health\/how-to-eat-carbs-like-a-biohacker-without-gaining-weight\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dave Asprey<\/a>, is highlighting research that suggests it could be.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve had a nasty allergy or cold that made you horribly congested, you might have tried Afrin. The nasal spray is available over-the-counter at any drug store and can be a godsend \u2014 immediately opening up your airways so you can breathe with ease.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s a warning you\u2019ll find on every label: Do not use for more than three days in a row.<\/p>\n<p>The body quickly adapts to the drug, and becomes reliant on it to keep airways free. If this happens, when you stop using the drug, your sinuses will swell much larger than before you started using it in the first place. Kidding,\u201d Asprey wrote in an Instagram post. \u201cThat\u2019s a bad idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That said, researchers are seeing evidence the drug\u2019s active ingredient, oxymetazoline, could be repurposed in the future to keep our cells young and functional. <\/p>\n<p>Asprey says a solution that looks familiar and is readily available could be the \u201cnext longevity breakthrough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the biggest longevity wins will come from a drug that\u2019s already sitting on a shelf, not from some new molecule,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI\u2019ve been saying this for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How could Afrin affect aging?<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from Northeastern University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43587-026-01161-8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">looked at 6,442 drugs<\/a> to see how they might impact 11 biological processes called \u201challmarks of aging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These include changes to whether genes are turned \u201con\u201d or \u201coff\u201d (called epigenetic alterations) and cells losing the ability to clear proteins inside it, allowing them to accumulate.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers found that oxymetazoline, the active ingredient in Afrin, could help with one of these \u201challmarks\u201d \u2013 cell-to-cell communication.<\/p>\n<p>Aging affects how cells send, receive, and process chemical messages across the body. This has a <a href=\"https:\/\/lifespan.io\/topic\/altered-intercellular-communication\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">number of negative effects<\/a>, from dampening the immune system to muscle and bone loss.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"40355508\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/senior-woman-flu-using-nasal-137504892.jpg\" alt=\"Senior woman using nasal spray for allergy.\" class=\"wp-image-40355508\"  \/>Afrin is a helpful, but habit forming decongestant. But its active ingredient oxymetazoline could be repurposed in the future for anti-aging therapies. Rido \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Oxymetazoline, which is also in Sinex nasal sprays, eyedrops and topical creams for redness, could be repurposed to improve this natural breakdown in communications.<\/p>\n<p>Research on how the drug might affect cells is being done at Harvard right now, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.northeastern.edu\/2026\/06\/26\/longevity-research-drugs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">researchers said<\/a>. They hope to find how exactly oxymetazoline improves communication between cells.<\/p>\n<p>But right now, no research is being done with humans. And authors noted that they don\u2019t see this as a \u201ccure for aging,\u201d and rather that \u201cit offers a roadmap\u201d to be tested in cells, animals and eventually, humans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we are not there yet,\u201d lead author Bnaya Gross said. But \u201cwe are moving toward the era of preciseness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Could Aspirin be another anti-aging aid?<\/p>\n<p>The study highlighted a number of other drugs that could help with aging.<\/p>\n<p>Aspirin was shown to play a role in five hallmarks of aging, including the same one oxymetazoline affects: intercellular communication.<\/p>\n<p>It also helps with epigenetic alterations (turning genes on and off), proteostasis (clearing proteins), nutrient sensing (reacting to things like changes in sugar, fat, and waste), and cell senescence (cells that don\u2019t die but stop dividing).<\/p>\n<p>Like oxymetazoline, any anti-aging benefits in humans haven\u2019t been studied.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Could a notoriously habit-forming drug be a key to prolonging life?
