{"id":1003119,"date":"2026-08-15T21:11:10","date_gmt":"2026-08-15T21:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1003119\/"},"modified":"2026-08-15T21:11:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-15T21:11:10","slug":"west-notes-hughes-smith-marsh-tuomaala-pro-hockey-rumors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1003119\/","title":{"rendered":"West Notes: Hughes, Smith, Marsh, Tuomaala \u2013 Pro Hockey Rumors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"byline\">\n  By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prohockeyrumors.com\/author\/brianlarose\" title=\"Posts by Brian La Rose\" rel=\"author nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brian La Rose<\/a> |<br \/>\n  at August 15, 2026 2:55 pm  <\/p>\n<p>One of the big storylines at this point of the summer is on the contract extension front.\u00a0 Several prominent pending unrestricted free agents have yet to sign new deals, leading to speculation about their futures.\u00a0 One of those is Wild defenseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hughequ01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-08-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Quinn Hughes<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 While many expect him to sign a three-year extension that lines up his contract timeline with his brother <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=hugheja03,hugheja02&amp;search=Jack+Hughes&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-08-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jack Hughes<\/a><\/strong> (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/h\/hughelu01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-08-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Luke Hughes<\/a><\/strong> has six years left), it hasn\u2019t happened yet.\u00a0 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7509333\/2026\/08\/14\/wild-quinn-hughes-kirill-kaprizov-fan-survey\/?unlocked_article_code=1.5VA.VPUu.JlqTPr3GHGuK&amp;source=emp_shared_article&amp;smid=ta-ios-share\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Michael Russo of The Athletic relays<\/a> word from multiple league sources that the 26-year-old\u2019s intentions are still to eventually sign a new deal with Minnesota.\u00a0 However, the rapid changes to the market this summer \u2013 particularly the higher-end players \u2013 have certainly made the process harder.\u00a0 It stands to reason that a deal will check in higher than <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hockey-reference.com\/players\/k\/kapriki01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.prohockeyrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-08-15_hr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kirill Kaprizov<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s $17MM price tag; it\u2019s just a matter of how much more and when the deal ultimately gets finalized.<\/p>\n<p>More from out West:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"longlis\">\n<li>Earlier this week, the Golden Knights added some extra forward depth in their system. Their AHL affiliate in Henderson <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hendersonsilverknights.com\/silver-knights-sign-forward-shane-smith\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announced<\/a> the signing of <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eliteprospects.com\/player\/642603\/shane-smith\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Shane Smith<\/a><\/strong> to a one-year deal.\u00a0 The 21-year-old split last season between WHL Lethbridge and Kelowna, potting 33 goals and 35 assists in 61 games in his final year of major junior eligibility.\u00a0 Smith attended development camp with Vegas back in 2024.<\/li>\n<li>Ryan Marsh, who worked with the Oilers as a coaching consultant last season, will not return to the club this year, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edmontonjournal.com\/sports\/hockey\/nhl\/edmonton-oilers-connor-ingram-jeff-skinner-nhl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">relays Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal<\/a>. Instead, Marsh is off to the KHL, accepting an assistant coaching position with Shanghai.\u00a0 Marsh has moved around a lot in recent years, spending time in the WHL, DEL, AJHL, BCHL, and NHL over the last five seasons.<\/li>\n<li>After being non-tendered by Dallas earlier this summer, forward <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eliteprospects.com\/player\/499422\/samu-tuomaala\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Samu Tuomaala<\/a><\/strong> has found a new team.
