{"id":1003829,"date":"2026-08-16T05:20:31","date_gmt":"2026-08-16T05:20:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1003829\/"},"modified":"2026-08-16T05:20:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-16T05:20:31","slug":"ben-rices-struggles-at-plate-coming-at-wrong-time-for-yankees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1003829\/","title":{"rendered":"Ben Rice&#8217;s struggles at plate coming at wrong time for Yankees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO \u2014 The reasons for the Yankees offense death-spiraling over the past two months are spread up and down the lineup.<\/p>\n<p>But among the more notable culprits has been Ben Rice not producing like the Ben Rice from earlier this season.<\/p>\n<p>Before going 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts Saturday in <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/15\/sports\/yankees-offensive-woes-continue-in-another-loss-to-blue-jays\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a 4-1 loss to the Blue Jays<\/a>, the slugging first baseman still came into the game with the fifth-highest OPS in the American League at .883 and the third-most home runs with 32. But over his past 21 games, he was hitting just .130 (10-for-77) with a .494 OPS and two home runs, coinciding with a team-wide slump.<\/p>\n<p>Going back even further, over his past 46 games, he was batting .193 with a .694 OPS and 10 home runs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefinitely been going through it here in the second half,\u201d manager Aaron Boone said before Saturday\u2019s loss. \u201cJust getting under some balls or getting on top of balls. AP<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve felt increasingly good,\u201d Rice said after their latest defeat. \u201cOver the last couple series, I feel like the swing has felt good and I\u2019m hitting some balls hard, not getting rewarded for it. Just got to keep going. That\u2019s literally the only thing you can do is just keep going. It\u2019s all you can do in this game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saturday was a grind for Cam Schlittler, but he still turned it into 5 \u00b9\/\u2083 innings of one-run ball while striking out seven and walking three. <\/p>\n<p>He finished the day with a 2.19 ERA, keeping pace in the AL Cy Young race before his biggest threat \u2014 Blue Jays ace Dylan Cease \u2014 takes the ball for Sunday\u2019s series finale. Cease enters the start with a 2.40 ERA in 20 \u00b2\/\u2083 fewer innings than Schlittler.<\/p>\n<p>While Cody Bellinger (hamstring strain) is on track to begin a rehab assignment next week, Boone was mum on when that might be the case for Giancarlo Stanton (calf strain). <\/p>\n<p>The veteran DH did not make the trip to Toronto, instead staying back at Yankee Stadium to continue his running progression, which now includes the bases \u2014 the stage where Stanton re-injured himself in June.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tYankees Merch Shop\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tNew York Post receives revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and when you make a purchase.\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know he hit out on the field [Friday] again,\u201d Boone said. \u201cBut I don\u2019t know when he would be ready to start something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Blue Jays <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/15\/sports\/vladimir-guerrero-jr-evaluated-for-concussion-in-potential-huge-blue-jays-blow\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">placed Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on the seven-day concussion injured list<\/a> Saturday after he left Friday\u2019s game early following a collision with George Lombard Jr.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGo beyond the box score with the Bombers\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for Inside the Yankees by Greg Joyce, exclusively on Sports+.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThank you\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Boone said he spoke to the league on Friday night and Saturday morning about his ejection in the series opener \u2014 tossed by home plate umpire Vic Carapazza for arguing balls and strikes \u2014 which appeared to be among the tamer (at least initially) of his 50 career ejections. <\/p>\n<p>After Friday\u2019s loss, he called it a \u201ctired toss\u201d by Carapazza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook, I said what I was going to say [Friday] night,\u201d Boone said. \u201cAt the end of the day, that\u2019s just one little part of the game, and it had nothing to do with us winning or losing last night. We got to find a way to score more.
