Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is leading the push for a national gun buyback scheme despite a newly announced program in NSW expected to cost “hundreds of millions of dollars”.<\/p>\n

The prime minister heralded the joint NSW and federal government scheme as “taking guns off our streets” on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n

The scheme would see 274,000 guns taken out of circulation, with those with excess firearms receiving up to $1,000 for their weapons from November 2.<\/p>\n

By early next year, that figure would rise to $10,000 for those with a market value of more than $3,000.<\/p>\n

When asked if other states would follow NSW, Mr Albanese called out the “farcical” firearms legislation in other parts of the nation.<\/p>\n

“I think it is somewhat farcical that some states were still \u2026 having paper licences that therefore couldn’t be traced,” Mr Albanese said.”What I would say is in the Commonwealth they have a willing partner.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In Victoria, Premier Ben Carroll stopped short in committing to a similar scheme on Sunday.<\/p>\n

When asked repeatedly about the possibility of a gun buyback in his own state, Mr Carroll said he would rely on advice from police on whether it was necessary.<\/p>\n

“I’ll continue to take my advice from the Chief Commissioner on what resources he needs,” Mr Carroll said.<\/p>\n

NSW premier says buyback costs ‘a price worth paying’<\/p>\n

It comes as NSW Premier Chris Minns vowed to fight opposition parties at next year’s election over a new gun buyback scheme, saying the issue was “too important for NSW”.<\/p>\n

The premier and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Sunday morning formally announced plans that would see an estimated 274,000 guns taken off the streets.<\/p>\n

The scheme was set to take more firearms out of circulation than the post-Port Arthur massacre buyback, the premier said.<\/p>\n

The reforms, part of “phase one” of post-Bondi Beach terror attack laws, are opposed by One Nation who have planned to repeal the legislation should they win office in the state.<\/p>\n

“One Nation said they’re scrapping all this \u2026 all the laws \u2026 so it is on the ballot whether we want it or not,” Mr Minns said.<\/p>\n

“This is too important for NSW.<\/p>\n

“We’re ready to fight an election on it, not that we want that, we’re not changing our position and voters ought to know that when they cast their ballot.”<\/p>\n

When asked how much the scheme would cost taxpayers, Mr Minns said it could be “hundreds of millions of dollars”.<\/p>\n

“It is largely demand driven, the costs are split 50\/50 so we don’t have an exact cost today but its hundreds of millions of dollars,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I’m not gonna skirt it, it’s expensive. But it’s a price worth paying.”<\/p>\n

Opposition call scheme ‘bulls***’<\/p>\n

In response, NSW Opposition Leader Kellie Sloane called the scheme “bulls***”.<\/p>\n

New South Wales will become the first state to begin a gun buyback scheme promised in the wake of the Bondi massacre, with shooters to be compensated up to $10,000 per firearm.<\/p>\n

“To suggest a gun buyback is going to solve this for us, is going to stop another Bondi, it’s absolute bulls***, and I’m sorry for the language, it’s entirely unlike me, but I am frustrated and we need to make sure that we are addressing the real enemy,” she said.<\/p>\n

“I can tell you the real enemy is not a farmer, and it is not a law-abiding sporting shooter from Sydney’s west, that is not the real enemy.<\/p>\n

“You’ve got to be absolutely kidding yourself if you think that criminals, organised criminals, the people shooting up our streets in south-west Sydney, or that would-be terrorists are going to walk into a cop shop and hand over their guns.<\/p>\n

“I mean, that’s a joke.”<\/p>\n

Speaking on News24 on Sunday morning, One Nation leader Pauline Hanson doubled down on her party’s opposition to the reforms.<\/p>\n

“They’re heading down the wrong path,” Ms Hanson said.<\/p>\n

“Look at the people we have brought into the country, look at the radicals, look at the numbers that are on the watchlist.<\/p>\n

“This is what we should be going after, not law-abiding Australians who are trying to go about their business like farmers who need their guns.”<\/p>\n

Speaking from Narrabri in north-west NSW, <\/strong>national president of Shooter Union Australia, Graham Park, told the ABC the state’s buyback scheme would be a “slap in the face” to licensed gun owners and small businesses in an already highly regulated sector.<\/p>\n

He said the state government’s decision to move forward with the reforms, despite a number of appeals, shirked responsibility from policymakers and onto “the most law-abiding sector of NSW.”<\/p>\n

Shooters, Fishers and Farmers MLC Mark Banasiak said he <\/strong>would not surrender his firearms if he could legally avoid it and would encourage other license-holders to follow suit.<\/p>\n

“Like many others, I am going through the steps of getting partners licensed up and getting my adult kids licensed up so they can take the firearms into their names,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I don’t want to be party to wasting taxpayers’ money.”<\/p>\n

83,000 guns bought back in WA<\/p>\n

WA Labor Minister John Carey said Western Australia was supportive of a national scheme and the state has been a leader in firearm legislation and buybacks.<\/p>\n

“There’s been 83,000 guns that have been bought back so we’re way out front,” he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Carey said WA was still negotiating with the Commonwealth, and the state and wants to see a “consistent national scheme.”<\/p>\n

“It is in everyone’s interest to have one consistent national framework,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Obviously guns can move between borders so we want to see all states embracing the same scheme.<\/p>\n
