Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The distancing is striking because Winfrey was instrumental in introducing both men to a mass audience on \u201cThe Oprah Winfrey Show\u201d before her Harpo Productions helped turn them into stand-alone television brands.<\/p>\n<p>Winfrey acknowledged as much, saying the reason she gave both men their \u201cbreaks\u201d was that she believed they had information worth sharing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time, the reason and intention behind me giving them their breaks was I thought they had valuable information to share that had been meaningful to me,\u201d Winfrey said.<\/p>\n<p>McGraw\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2002\/09\/23\/dr-phil-makes-a-move-on-oprah\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">relationship with Winfrey dates to 1998<\/a>, when he helped her during a six-week Texas trial stemming from a lawsuit filed by cattlemen who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/story\/a-brief-history-of-food-libel-laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">accused her of defaming the beef industry.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Phil, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2011\/05\/05\/phil-in-the-blank-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he was so practical<\/a>, so down to earth, so real,\u201d Winfrey told Emmy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he would ride in the car with me every morning on the way to trial, where I\u2019m literally sitting on trial for six weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Phil McGraw has spoken in support of President Trump at several public appearances in recent years. AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Winfrey said McGraw\u2019s advice made such an impression that she decided to put him before her viewers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt that he was so instrumental in helping me,\u201d she said. \u201cI thought, \u2018Oh, you could help a lot of people. You should come on my show.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McGraw became one of Oprah\u2019s most familiar experts, ultimately logging 118 appearances, according to official statistics from the show.<\/p>\n<p>His first book, \u201cLife Strategies,\u201d became a bestseller in 1999, with Publishers Weekly crediting Oprah\u2019s endorsement as one factor behind its success.<\/p>\n<p>Harpo then created \u201cDr. Phil,\u201d which premiered in September 2002 as the first spin-off from \u201cThe Oprah Winfrey Show.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The show became a daytime juggernaut, ranking behind only Oprah for nine seasons before taking over as the syndicated daytime-talk leader after Winfrey ended her show in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Mehmet Oz won President Trump\u2019s endorsement during his 2022 Republican Senate bid and later joined his administration as head of the Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>But McGraw\u2019s public profile has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/dr-phil-says-legacy-media-creating-criminals-distorting-la-riot-coverage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">taken a pronounced political turn in recent years.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>He appeared at <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/27\/us-news\/donald-trumps-nyc-rally-at-msg-live-updates-photos-protests-more\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump\u2019s Madison Square Garden campaign rally<\/a> in October 2024, where he defended Trump and his supporters, although he later insisted the appearance was not an endorsement and declined to reveal how he voted.<\/p>\n<p>McGraw subsequently accompanied Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel during an enforcement operation in Chicago alongside Trump border czar Tom Homan.<\/p>\n<p>Trump appointed McGraw to his Religious Liberty Commission in May of last year.<\/p>\n<p>Winfrey, by contrast, has repeatedly backed Democrats even while describing herself as a registered independent. She endorsed Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris and campaigned for Stacey Abrams in Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>The political split with Oz is even more explicit.<\/p>\n<p>Oprah Winfrey says she has \u201cnot one thing to do with\u201d the later paths of Dr. Phil McGraw and Dr. Mehmet Oz, despite acknowledging that she gave both television stars their big breaks. Getty Images for Amazon<\/p>\n<p>Winfrey said longtime pal Gayle King first introduced her to the heart surgeon, whose skill at translating medical subjects for ordinary viewers convinced her to bring him onto the show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGayle introduced me to Dr. Oz,\u201d Winfrey told Emmy. \u201cHe explained practical things like colon cancer and bowel movements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought he had the language for explaining medical things in a way that was helpful to me. I thought it would be helpful to many other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oz began appearing on \u201cOprah\u201d in 2004 and became one of the program\u2019s most recognizable medical experts.<\/p>\n<p>Harpo later produced \u201cThe Dr. Oz Show\u201d with Sony, helping transform him from a recurring TV doctor into a nationally syndicated star.<\/p>\n<p>Harpo and Oz also became co-founders of the digital-health company Sharecare alongside Sony, Discovery and other partners.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Phil McGraw is seen outside the White House in Washington, DC, on Friday, June 26, 2026.
