This post contains details from the premiere of <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/hbo\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hbo\" data-tag=\"hbo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HBO<\/a>\u2018s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/lanterns\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lanterns\" data-tag=\"lanterns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lanterns<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAll is not what it seems in HBO\u2019s Lanterns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe series premiered Sunday night, introducing audiences to <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/kyle-chandler\/\" id=\"auto-tag_kyle-chandler\" data-tag=\"kyle-chandler\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kyle Chandler<\/a> as the legendary Lantern Hal Jordan and his trainee John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre). Whatever plans Hal has for John\u2019s training regimen are quickly interrupted by murder in Rushville, Nebraska, that Hal suspects has something to do with aliens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tMuch of the first episode sets up the mystery that the Green Lantern and his protege are aiming to solve before ending with a twist. The final moments flash forward from 2016 (when Hal is training John) to 2026. Hal Jordan is dead \u2014 and John is ostensibly not the Green Lantern. The pair largely haven\u2019t spoken in a decade, and Rushville\u2019s sheriff has only summoned John after finding Hal\u2019s body at the football stadium, where their intergalactic murder investigation began all those years ago. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThis, Chandler explains, is what \u201copens up the whole mystery of the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cThe whole search is to find out what happened to him,\u201d he told Deadline. \u201cI like the fact that the show is non-linear and they\u2019ve layered it like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe reveal introduces audiences to the fact that there is not one murder mystery being solved throughout this series, there are two, and the events in 2016 clearly have some sort of influence on what\u2019s to come. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tChandler likened the experience of telling a non-linear story to \u201cthree-dimensional chess\u201d because of the layers involved in playing the characters\u2019 emotional truth at any given moment in the series. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cOnce you get all your pages taped on the wall and you know where all your scenes are, then you can take this page in the script and this page in the script, and figure out how to play with the material to reveal things differently, or to lay Easter eggs as the actor,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, maybe later on, if not anyone else, I remember I did that. You can have fun doing things, but it\u2019s complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tLanterns is from co-creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King.
