So who is our City Council helping?

Water leaks cost us more because old infrastructure was not fixed, and now we pay more for that water. Water is a precious resource and should not be wasted.

As a trial lawyer who has represented injured Texans for more than 30 years, I find myself in the unusual position of agreeing wholeheartedly with the letter writer.

Good trial lawyers despise barratry. Soliciting grieving or injured people through runners, paid intermediaries or other improper means exploits people when they are most vulnerable.

It also tarnishes an honorable profession by allowing the conduct of a few bad actors to define thousands of lawyers who would never engage in such practices.

The letter writer and I would undoubtedly disagree about many issues affecting our civil justice system.

I believe strongly that injured Texans deserve meaningful access to the courthouse and the right to hold those who harm them accountable. But barratry does not advance victims’ rights. It undermines them.

On this issue, there should be no plaintiff or defense side. Lawyers, judges, legislators and the public should all want the same thing: strong enforcement against those who prey on vulnerable people while protecting the right of Texans to freely choose a lawyer they trust.

I’m wondering if the candidates who call themselves Democratic Socialists truly mean they want the United States to own the tools, factories and infrastructure, and to feed and house all of its citizens.

This is completely different than a desire to help the poor and disadvantaged.

Who does our City Council believe they are protecting?
