Salmonella risks continue to lead the national news cycle, after an egg recall was reclassified to the highest risk level <\/a>by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration this month and a number of jalape\u00f1o products were recalled in stores across the country.<\/p>\n

But are salmonella cases in the city? And what exactly should you be checking your fridge for?<\/p>\n

Here’s a breakdown of what city officials have said and how you can get some peace of mind before your next meal.<\/p>\n

Is salmonella in Philadelphia? Salmonella stats in Philly<\/p>\n

As of Aug. 11, no salmonella cases in the city were linked to the outbreak associate with jalape\u00f1os.<\/p>\n

However, 41 cases were reported in a preliminary count of salmonella from June and July of this year.<\/p>\n

According to Philadelphia’s Department of Public Health, that count was consistent with the same time frame over the last five years.<\/p>\n

What products are recalled for salmonella?<\/p>\n

Eggs and jalape\u00f1o products have both faced recent salmonella-related recalls.<\/p>\n

What eggs were recalled for salmonella?<\/p>\n

The FDA has classified a recent recall of almost 1.6 million dozen eggs to Class I, indicating “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”<\/p>\n

The affected products appear to have been distributed mainly under The Kroger Co., Brookshire Grocery Co., and the Country Morning brand.<\/p>\n

Eggs under the recall should have a Best By\/Sell By date between July 20 and Aug. 17, according to the FDA with Codes P-1950 or 0840962 and a Julian Date between 157 and 184 printed on the left or right side of the egg carton.<\/p>\n

What jalape\u00f1o products were recalled?<\/p>\n

A number of jalapeno products nationwide were recalled this month in connection to a potential salmonella outbreak linked to Coast Citrus Distributors and Taylor Farms.<\/a><\/p>\n

According to an Aug. 9 company announcement from Taylor Farms posted to the FDA website<\/a>, a number of products using jalape\u00f1os from Coast Citrus Distributors were voluntarily recalled.<\/p>\n

These Taylor Farms products were marked by a “Best if Used By” date up to and including Aug. 16, though it doesn’t appear that affected products were distributed in Pennsylvania according to the FDA recall notice.<\/p>\n
