During the inspection, workers spotted clusters of golden mussels clinging to the underside of the hull.

“You can see them underneath here. But as you closer examine it, there’s mussels all over the bottom of the boat,” Sally Mello, owner of Mello Marine, told KCRA.

A boat with invasive golden mussels was intercepted at a Folsom Lake decontamination site near Sacramento Saturday. KCRA3

The boat was brought in for a decontamination and tagging when crews found the invasive species. KCRA3

Mello said her team has decontaminated roughly 6,000 boats since 2025, but this was the first time they had encountered golden mussels.

According to Mello, the boat, which had come from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, had followed all the required steps, including mandatory watercraft inspections and decontamination protocols, with plans to continue north to Oregon after visiting heavily used Folsom Lake, which draws more than 2 million visitors a year.

“Imagine, again, if this boat went to Oregon and now just gets put in the Oregon waters and now it’s north of where it is now,” Mello said.

The vessel arrived at Mello Marine in Folsom before it was to launch into the popular lake. It will be fully decontaminated and quarantined for 30 days before it can return to the waterways.

Download The California Post App, follow us on social, and subscribe to our newsletters

California Post News: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube, WhatsApp, LinkedIn
California Post Sports Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X
California Post Opinion
California Post Newsletters: Sign up here!
California Post App: Download here!
Home delivery: Sign up here!
Page Six Hollywood: Sign up here!

A boat blanketed in invasive golden mussels was stopped just in time at a Folsom Lake decontamination site…

[23
32258,276,56409,17078,746,5248,22875,159,139834,67,132,68,1154
post-1006839","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-boats","tag-california","tag-contaminated-water","tag-contamination","tag-environment","tag-metro","tag-sacramento","tag-science","tag-toxic","tag-united-states","tag-unitedstates","tag-us","tag-us-news
["GET
