The experience will feature a collaboration with Philadelphia artist Terrence Gore, urban forager and herbalist Lady Danni Morinich and Dr. Burton of Burton Wellness & Injury Center.

Moderated by Maiken Scott (host and executive producer of WHYY’s health and science program ‘The Pulse’), the day’s discussion will approach healing from artistic, cultural, botanical and medical traditions. As a release notes, the program will explore art as a powerful tool while examining the medicinal and practical uses of greenery found throughout Philadelphia. It will also consider how traditional knowledge of plants, alternative healing practices, and contemporary medicine can complement and inform one another, offering different ways of understanding recovery and resilience.

“This conversation reflects something people have understood across cultures and generations: healing does not happen in only one place or take only one form,” said Shanna Mitchell, arts and culture program manager at Bartram’s Garden. “At Bartram’s Garden, visitors can experience the connections among land, history, creativity and well-being in a setting that makes those ideas tangible.”

For the panelists, the conversation is also personal. Philadelphia artist Terrence Gore turned to art after a serious health diagnosis in 2006, drawing inspiration from places like Bartram’s Garden, which he notes has been part of his life since childhood. Urban forager and herbalist Lady Danni Morinich has plenty of experience helping Philadelphia residents recognize the food, medicine, and history found in plants often overlooked as weeds. And Dr. Burton will round out the conversation with a medical perspective, exploring integrative approaches to care.

Following the panel discussion, guests will also have the opportunity to step outside for a guided walk through Bartram’s Garden, and light refreshments will be provided.

Note, the event is free, but advance registration is requested. The venue is wheelchair accessible via a paved path from the main visitor parking area, but guests who need additional mobility accommodations are encouraged to contact Bartram’s Garden in advance.

‘Healing in the Garden: Art, Plants, and Medicine’ will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, at the Barn at Bartram’s Garden (5400 Lindbergh Blvd).
