{"id":1008405,"date":"2026-08-18T10:19:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T10:19:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1008405\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T10:19:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T10:19:16","slug":"prototype-hybrid-electric-aircraft-lands-in-philadelphia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1008405\/","title":{"rendered":"Prototype hybrid-electric aircraft lands in Philadelphia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                    \u2018Everything will electrify\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The crowd gathered at the Tioga terminal, the northernmost terminal of the Port of Philadelphia, to watch the prototype EL2 land and take off from an open area bordered by rows of graffiti-covered shipping containers.<\/p>\n<p>The watch party was organized in part by Max Tuttleman, a philanthropist and former City Council candidate. He\u2019s the CEO of LAND, a company that aims to provide a range of services to the hybrid-electric fleets and encourage their development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhiladelphia and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania can be one of the first beneficiaries of this type of technology,\u201d Tuttleman said. \u201c[LAND wants to provide] areas for these aircraft to land and recharge, hangar facilities, the electric infrastructure behind those types of facilities, terminal facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-750324\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2026-08-17-e-lee-max-tuttleman-philadelphia-tioga-marine-terminal-electra-plane-test-flight.jpeg\" alt=\"Max Tuttleman talks with Mark Squilla\" width=\"2100\" height=\"1401\"  \/>Max Tuttleman (center) is CEO of LAND, a development company which he says will provide infrastructure for Electra\u2019s short-takeoff planes. (Emma Lee\/WHYY)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we think about the electrification of multimodal transportation and what is to come, everything will <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2026\/04\/30\/philadelphia-electric-vehicle-ev-charger-itselectric-positivenergy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">electrify<\/a>. We need places where those vehicles can be homed and hubbed and recharged, so operators are willing to make the capital investment in those types of electric vehicles,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Neilson, elected officials on hand included Philadelphia Democrats state Sen. Christine Tartaglione, state Reps. Jared Solomon and Jordan Harris, and City Councilmembers Mark Squilla and Rue Landau.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether it\u2019s cargo or whether it\u2019s travel or whatever it is, we need to really look at how we as a city are going to address the future of transportation,\u201d Squilla said. \u201cI\u2019m excited to see how this works, and looking forward to working with all the stakeholders to bring this to fruition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Four students from the Aviation Institute of Maintenance at the <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/two-injured-northeast-philadelphia-plane-crash\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Northeast Philadelphia Airport<\/a> watched the EL2\u2019s landing and takeoff. They said they were wowed by its floaty maneuvering, short takeoff space and innovative power system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was so different from your conventional airliner,\u201d 20-year-old Mekhi Smith said. \u201cThe way it moves is unlike anything I\u2019ve ever seen.
