JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 From family strolls to outdoor exercise and fishing, Jacksonville residents found ways to cope Monday as temperatures climbed to 101 degrees, with the heat index reaching 112 degrees.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re just breathing slowly and walking slowly and not having far to go,\u201d Mary Love said. \u201cIt\u2019s a convection oven. Even the wind is hot.\u201d<\/p>\n

While some residents modified their outdoor activities, others maintained their exercise routines. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all about hydration. To stay moving and active in this heat, have to stay hydrated,\u201d said Nekhwadjet Maat.<\/p>\n

For dog walker Grace Hodges, the scorching temperatures meant adapting her schedule while managing three dogs simultaneously. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you feel that heat coming on, it drives you crazy,\u201d Hodges said. She limits walks to no more than 30 minutes in extreme conditions.<\/p>\n

The triple-digit temperatures didn\u2019t deter some residents from fishing. Isiah Brooks\u2019s strategy for dealing with the heat was straightforward: \u201cDrinking water and staying hydrated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not everyone seemed bothered by the conditions. When asked about wearing a long-sleeved shirt in the heat, Brianna Copeland responded, \u201cNo. I\u2019m not hot at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Construction workers faced particularly challenging conditions, wearing layers of protective clothing under the intense sun. \u201cIt\u2019s like being stuck in an oven. It\u2019s really hot,\u201d said Junior Cordova, a construction supervisor. \u201cMy guys have to keep hydrated. We\u2019re giving them breaks every hour.\u201d<\/p>\n

While most hospitals in the Jacksonville metropolitan area have not reported increases in heat-related emergency room visits, UF Health confirmed they have treated several heat-related cases.<\/p>\n
