In other words, they appeared to work harder without feeling as though they were.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"56\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Both environments were associated with mood benefits, however. The outdoor group reported feeling more energised afterwards, while the indoor group experienced a reduction in tension.<\/p>\n<p>Treadmill vs outdoor walking for fat loss, strength and fitness<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"61\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">If your goal is sustainable fat loss, says Rowe-Ham, treadmill and outdoor walking are fairly evenly matched.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"65\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018A step is a step; what matters is how much and how often you walk, so whichever gets you moving more wins,\u2019 she notes.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"69\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">What if building strength is the aim? While \u2018neither builds real muscle on its own\u2019 \u2013 you&#8217;ll need <a data-start=\"3988\" data-end=\"4102\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a36107039\/resistance-training\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a36107039\/resistance-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"resistance training\" data-node-id=\"69.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\">resistance training<\/a> for that \u2013 Rowe-Ham says \u2018incline treadmill walking at 10\u201315% is the better glute and leg workout\u2019.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"73\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">For general cardiovascular fitness, both are useful. \u2018Treadmill edges it for structured intervals; outdoors edges it for those long, easy walks that build your aerobic base,\u2019 says Rowe-Ham.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"77\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">So rather than picking a winner, incorporating both could give you the best of each: the treadmill for controlled, structured sessions and outdoor walking for longer, lower-intensity movement.<\/p>\n<p>3 treadmill vs outdoor walking myths<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"83\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">There are also a few persistent myths about how treadmill and outdoor walking compare.<\/p>\n<p>1. You need a 1% treadmill incline to mimic walking outdoors<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"88\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">You may have heard that setting a treadmill to a 1% incline replicates the energy demands of moving outside. But that rule originates from running research, notes Rowe-Ham.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"92\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018At walking speeds, the calorie difference is tiny.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"96\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">The bigger difference may be in how you move.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"100\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018On a treadmill, we all walk a bit more cautiously, with shorter strides and quicker steps. Outdoors, you\u2019re dealing with different elements: kerbs, cambers, slopes and turns, which wake up all the little stabilising muscles around your ankles and hips.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"104\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Rowe-Ham herself used to favour the treadmill before becoming a convert to outdoor exercise.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"108\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018I used to be a total treadmill runner: controlled, predictable, job done, but once I learned about the outdoor benefits and what that uneven ground was doing for my balance and bones, it won me over.\u2019<\/p>\n<blockquote data-theme-key=\"pullquote\" data-pullquote-align=\"left\" class=\"css-1uh0taj e1f76l351\">\n<blockquote class=\"css-sh2zho e1f76l350\"><p>&#8216;Outdoor walking wakes up all the little stabilising muscles around your ankles and hips&#8217;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>2. The treadmill belt does some of the work for you<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"114\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Not at typical walking speeds, says Rowe-Ham.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"118\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018The belt doesn\u2019t do the work for you at walking speeds; that\u2019s a myth nicked from running research.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"122\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">And don&#8217;t put too much faith in the calorie figure flashing up on the screen, either.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"126\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018The treadmill calorie readout is often 20% off either way \u2013 that\u2019s the machine, not you.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>3. Outdoor steps automatically count for more<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"131\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u201810,000 steps outdoors doesn\u2019t magically beat 10,000 indoors, step for step,\u2019 says Rowe-Ham. \u2018The extra value outside comes from light, nature and terrain.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"135\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">In other words, the steps themselves aren&#8217;t inherently more valuable simply because you accumulated them outside. It&#8217;s the additional environmental factors that may provide benefits.<\/p>\n<p>So, should you walk outside or on a treadmill?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"140\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Ultimately, the best option is the one you&#8217;ll do consistently.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"144\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Rowe-Ham now opts for outdoor walking whenever possible \u2013 not least because she doesn\u2019t have a treadmill at home.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"148\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018I spent years loyal to the machine, and it served me well, but the day I took my walks outside properly, something shifted,\u2019 she says. \u2018My head felt clearer, the walks felt shorter and I actually looked forward to them.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"152\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Her advice? Use both according to what you need that day.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"156\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u2018Treadmill when the weather\u2019s grim, it\u2019s dark or steps need to happen while you\u2019re on calls. Outdoors when you need the head-clearing as much as the steps, and when balance and bone-loading matter, which, for women in midlife, is most of the time.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"160\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">And given that the average person in the UK reportedly spends just 7% of their working week \u2013 around 86 minutes a day \u2013 outdoors, according to <a data-start=\"7517\" data-end=\"7639\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/news-events\/news\/2025\/january\/how-short-time-in-nature-boost-wellbeing\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/news-events\/news\/2025\/january\/how-short-time-in-nature-boost-wellbeing\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Loughborough University\" data-node-id=\"160.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\">Loughborough University<\/a>, a walk can also be an easy way to get a little more fresh air into your day.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"164\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">The bottom line?
