{"id":1008773,"date":"2026-08-18T14:30:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T14:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1008773\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T14:30:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T14:30:17","slug":"ukraine-fires-nearly-800-drones-at-russia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1008773\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine fires nearly 800 drones at Russia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KYIV, Ukraine (AP) \u2014 Ukrainian forces staged one of their biggest drone attacks on Russia since <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/russia-ukraine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Moscow\u2019s invasion<\/a> more than four years ago, firing almost 800 drones just two days after launching <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-01294bf8744282086e8f76c8130e16ba\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a similar salvo<\/a>, officials said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a Russian missile strike on a village in Ukraine\u2019s northeastern Kharkiv region killed at least 10 people and wounded eight others as the barrage demolished homes, officials said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The warring countries are locked in an escalating duel of long-range aerial strikes. Fighting on the roughly 1,250-kilometer (780-mile) front line in eastern and southern Ukraine is restricted by large numbers of drones and ground robots threatening troop movements, and neither side is making significant battlefield progress, analysts say.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s Putin resists pressure for peace talks<\/p>\n<p>Over the past year Ukraine has devised and deployed domestically produced <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ukraine-drones-weapons-industry-russia-7201ab851544c394ee454407058b10ba\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">long-range drones<\/a> for strikes deep inside Russia. Its drone technology has <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-us-talks-iran-drones-40ad8f5481d954fe8207c3d576d540f7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">impressed governments<\/a> and defense manufacturers around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Kyiv officials aim to make the Russian public <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/magyar-drones-russia-ukraine-crimea-ef27266b99b2b0a706e011b642d4c3a5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">feel the war\u2019s consequences<\/a> and pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin into negotiating a peace settlement. Putin has so far shown <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-putin-ukraine-st-petersburg-economy-a57c76d347f580eaf8325062ed13a6ec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">no sign<\/a> he intends to stop the invasion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPutin continues to drag out the war instead of accepting Ukraine\u2019s realistic ceasefire proposals and ending the bloodshed,\u201d Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said in a post on X.<\/p>\n<p>Russian air defenses overnight intercepted 791 Ukrainian drones over a number of Russian regions, as well as annexed Crimea and the Black and the Azov seas, the Defense Ministry in Moscow said, in what was the second-largest drone attack since January 2025, according to an Associated Press tally.<\/p>\n<p>More than 600 Ukrainian drones flew toward the Moscow region, where 180 were shot down, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. He didn\u2019t provide further details.<\/p>\n<p>Officials reported no deaths or major damage. Ukraine has increasingly launched swarms of hundreds of drones in an attempt to overwhelm Russian air defenses.<\/p>\n<p>In the Moscow region that surrounds but doesn\u2019t include the Russian capital, three people were wounded, Gov. Andrei Vorobyov said.<\/p>\n<p>Three people were also wounded in the Ryazan region adjacent to the Moscow region where three private houses were damaged by the attack, Gov. Pavel Malkov said. <\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"html-embed-module-a00000\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n    <strong>Sign up for Morning Wire:<\/strong><br \/>\n    Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day.\n  <\/p>\n<p>The overnight attack started a fire at a warehouse of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-putin-wildberries-kim-48c331f100a1d981959c5d75a1397d21\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wildberries<\/a>, Russia\u2019s biggest online retailer, in an industrial zone. Ukraine has repeatedly targeted the company\u2019s depots, which it says help supply the Russian military.<\/p>\n<p>Wildberries said its facility sustained \u201cinsignificant damage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russian TV doesn\u2019t report news of the attack<\/p>\n<p>Coverage of the attack in state and Kremlin-backed Russian media was mostly muted, as is often the case.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s main television channels \u2014 state-run Russia 1 and Channel One \u2014 did not mention the attack at all in their morning news bulletins.<\/p>\n<p>But Russian state news agency RIA Novosti featured it among the main news on its website\u2019s homepage, describing it as \u201cone of the most large-scale attacks on Moscow since the beginning of the summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>State newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta on its website prominently featured a roundup of what Moscow region Gov. Andrei Vorobyov reported about the attack on the area, describing it as \u201cmassive\u201d in the headline. Pro-Kremlin tabloid MK featured a news brief about the attack on its home page.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s Zelenskyy accuses Russia of \u2018brutal attack\u2019 on civilians<\/p>\n<p>A Russian missile strike on the village of Pechenihy in Ukraine\u2019s Kharkiv region killed 10 civilians, according to preliminary information, said Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv regional military administration.<\/p>\n<p>Another 17 people were wounded, he said. Zelenskyy called it \u201ca brutal attack\u201d that damaged 10 homes, a cafe, a post office, a store and at least seven vehicles, according to Syniehubov.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will definitely respond to this Russian strike,\u201d Zelenskyy said on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Also, three people were killed and three others were wounded over the past day in Russian attacks on Ukraine\u2019s Sumy region, including drone strikes and an explosive device blast, Ukraine\u2019s National Police said.<\/p>\n<p>UK vows continued Ukraine support, despite Moscow\u2019s threats<\/p>\n<p>British Prime Minister <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/andy-burnham-uk-prime-minister-labour-starmer-a13602b93d8f045f1cffd2bd05bf8e2b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andy Burnham<\/a>, who took office last month, said the U.K. will continue to stand by Ukraine after Russia said that Ukraine\u2019s reported use of British drones for attacks on Russian soil would bring unidentified consequences for London.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are providing support so that Ukraine can defend itself, and that\u2019s been the British position all the way through this conflict by previous prime ministers,\u201d Burnham said. \u201cIt remains the case with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>British newspaper The Sunday Times reported that two U.K. companies made drones used by Ukraine to hit Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Following the report, the Russian embassy in the U.K. said in a statement that \u201cLondon\u2019s actions will inevitably carry consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>___<\/p>\n<p>Hatton reported from Lisbon, Portugal.
